Special Plant Tags — Definitions, Traits & Post-Arrival Care

Display Name Store Tag What the Tag Indicates
Grafted Tag: Grafted Scion joined to rootstock; union is the critical point
CITES-controlled (often Appendix II) Tag: EN Export permits required; some destinations also require import permits
Chemical Variegation Tag: CV Non-genetic coloration; display may fade or revert
Marginal Variegation Tag: MV Variegation along margins; pattern shifts with season/light
Clumping / Scattered Groups Tag: Scattered Multi-head cluster; offsets prone to separation/abrasion

Grafted Tag: Grafted

  • Definition: Scion is mechanically joined to a compatible rootstock; most colored scions have no independent own-root system.
  • Traits: Graft union is shock-sensitive; avoid twisting, burying, or any attempt to de-graft/re-root the scion.
  • Care on arrival: Keep the union above substrate, support the join, acclimate light gradually; irrigate lightly at first.
  • Buying notice: Visible union line or minor alignment difference after transit is common and not a viability defect.

CITES-controlled (EN) Tag: EN

  • Definition: Items governed by CITES (often Appendix II). Export permits are required; some destinations also require import permits.
  • Traits: Travels with permits/labels; border inspection possible. Here “EN” means CITES-controlled, not IUCN “Endangered”.
  • Care on arrival: Retain permits/labels with records; horticultural care follows species routine.
  • Buying notice: Permit workflow can extend lead time; consignee details must match paperwork exactly.

Chemical Variegation (CV) Tag: CV

  • Definition: Non-genetic variegation induced by treatment/stress; inherently unstable.
  • Traits: During new growth or after transit, color coverage may fade, shift, or partly revert.
  • Care on arrival: Moderate light + airflow; avoid heat/strong sun for 1–2 weeks; reassess after stabilization.
  • Buying notice: Pattern variability and partial reversion are expected and not a defect unless viability is affected.

Marginal Variegation (MV) Tag: MV

  • Definition: Variegation along leaf edges/margins.
  • Traits: Contrast and outline respond to light, temperature and season.
  • Care on arrival: Stabilize first; increase light stepwise to avoid margin scorch.
  • Buying notice: Photos show a time-point; seasonal change is normal.

Clumping / Scattered Groups Tag: Scattered

  • Definition: Multi-head cluster; total head count may vary slightly by harvest/handling.
  • Traits: Offsets more susceptible to separation and superficial abrasion in long-haul transport.
  • Care on arrival: Trim damaged tissue; let wounds dry; resume irrigation gradually in ventilated shade.
  • Buying notice: Minor offset loss/cosmetic rubbing is possible and usually recoverable.

Cactus Status Tags — Definitions, Traits & Post-Arrival Care

Offset / Pup Tag: Pup

  • Definition: A single lateral unit separated from a mother plant; shipment includes the pup only, not the mother plant.
  • Traits: May ship callused or pre-rooted (see product line). Size symmetry varies by source plant.
  • Care on arrival: If callused, allow extra callusing; start with light irrigation and high airflow.
  • Buying notice: Root initiation stage differs by batch; check the root status on the product line.

Seed-Grown Tag: Seed Grown

  • Definition: Propagated from seed; root system develops naturally from seedling stage.
  • Traits: Natural genetic variation across individuals; generally slower rhythm than offsets.
  • Care on arrival: Standard acclimation; avoid heavy watering until active uptake resumes.
  • Buying notice: Size/appearance tolerance follows the product specification.

Well Rooted (Own-Roots) Tag: Well Rooted

  • Definition: Established on its own root system; not freshly cut at shipment.
  • Traits: More stable across climates and long-haul lanes.
  • Care on arrival: 2–3 days acclimation in ventilated shade, then gradually increase light/water.
  • Buying notice: For export, soil is removed and roots are shipped dry; a dry-root appearance is normal.

Grafted (Status) Tag: Grafted

  • Definition: Individual is grafted; scion depends on the rootstock and typically has no independent roots.
  • Traits: Evaluate continuity of the union rather than total root mass; do not attempt to de-graft.
  • Care on arrival: Support union; ventilated shade 48–72h; light irrigation at first.
  • Buying notice: Union marks do not indicate loss of viability.

Buyer Checklist

Before Purchase

  • Read store tags on cards and collections (EN/CV/MV/Scattered; Pup/Seed Grown/Well Rooted/Grafted).
  • Confirm destination rules and permit needs for CITES-controlled items (EN).
  • Consider route length & climate; select rooting conditions suitable for long-haul lanes.
  • Note bare-root packing and lead time {{lead_time}}.

After Arrival

  • Acclimate 48–72h in ventilated shade; avoid immediate heavy watering.
  • Document issues (photos + labels) and report within 48h of delivery.
  • For grafted/clumping: support unions; trim superficial damage; monitor rehydration.
  • For CV/MV: expect temporary display shift / partial reversion during stabilization.

FAQ — Tags, CITES & Handling

Does “EN” here mean the IUCN threat category?

No. On this page EN means “CITES-controlled” for trade-permit handling (often Appendix II). IUCN’s “EN” is a separate conservation category.

Do Appendix-II (“EN”) items always need import permits?

Export permits are required under CITES. Some destinations (e.g., EU) also require import permits; check local rules before ordering.

Why can CV/MV display differ from photos after shipping?

CV is non-genetic and volatile; MV contrast changes with light/season. Reversion/shift may occur during new growth or after transit; stabilize first, then adjust light gradually.

Is a dry-root appearance normal for export?

Yes. Bare-root export requires removal of soil; roots are shipped clean and dry. Dry-root appearance is normal; rehydrate gradually after short acclimation.

What is included when I order a Pup?

A Pup is a single lateral offset only; the mother plant is not included. Root status is indicated on the product line.
